HYPERTENSION (HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE)

 




A condition in which the force of the blood against the artery walls is too high. Usually, hypertension is defined as blood pressure above 140/90, and is considered severe if the pressure is above 180/120. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. Over time, if untreated, it can cause health conditions, such as heart disease and stroke. Ideal blood pressure is usually considered to be between 90/60mmHg diastolic and 120/80mmHg systolic.

SYMPTOMS

Most people with high blood pressure have no signs or symptoms, even if blood pressure readings reach dangerously high levels. A few people with high blood pressure may have headaches, shortness of breath or nosebleeds, but these signs and symptoms are not specific and usually do not occur until high blood pressure has reached a severe or life-threatening stage.

Nutrients and foods that helps lower blood pressure are berries, banana, carrot, celery, beets, garlic, watermelon, green leafy vegetable, pomegranate juice plus others. Keep your weight down, obesity is a risk factor for high blood pressure. Get regular moderate exercise.

Eliminate all known sources of sodium from your diet. Keep sodium consumption below 6grams per day.

Quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption.

Manage your stress level.

Eat a healthy diet of whole grain, fruits and vegetables.

Get enough sleep at least 7 hours of sleep/day.

Take prescribed medications.

Treat any underlying conditions.
